Tryouts & Back to School: Building the Mental Strength of an Athlete
By Gina Alfieri, CNP NNCP
As our athletes step into the busy season of tryouts and back-to-school, the demands on their minds can be just as great as the demands on their bodies. While speed, skill, and strength are important on the field, mental resilience is what often sets players apart—both in sport and in life.
This time of year brings change, pressure, and uncertainty. New classes, new teachers, and the stress of tryouts can leave athletes feeling stretched. That’s why it’s so important to focus on mental strength alongside physical preparation. A strong mindset helps athletes manage nerves, bounce back from mistakes, and keep perspective whether they make the team or not.
Here are a few reminders for our players:
- Control the controllables: You can’t control the lineup or the outcome, but you can control effort, attitude, and preparation.
- Embrace mistakes as growth: Every missed pass or tough practice is an opportunity to learn.
- Stay balanced: Rest, nutrition, and time with friends are just as important as training.
- Encourage self-talk: A positive voice in your own head can fuel confidence and resilience.
Here are five ways athletes can strengthen their mental game this season:
- Breathe & Reset
Before practices, tryouts, or even exams, take a few slow, deep breaths. This helps calm the nervous system and shifts focus back to the present moment. - Set Small Goals
Instead of only focusing on “making the team,” set daily or weekly goals like improving first touch, giving 100% effort, or encouraging a teammate. Small wins build confidence. - Positive Self-Talk
Replace “I can’t do this” with “I’ve prepared for this” or “I’m going to give my best today.” The words we use with ourselves shape performance more than we realize. - Visualize Success
Spend a few minutes imagining a successful pass, shot, game situation and even a completion of your school project. Visualization builds confidence and helps athletes step on the field feeling prepared and into the classroom with confidence. - Prioritize Recovery
A strong mind needs a rested body. Prioritize good sleep, balanced nutrition, and downtime away from screens to recharge both mentally and physically.
At Milton Magic, we believe in developing the whole athlete. That means not only building skill and fitness, but also fostering character, confidence, and a love for the game. As the season begins, let’s support our athletes in strengthening both body and mind—because true success in sport is built on both.
