Shayne Griffin won’t let prosperity give way to complacency.

To that end, you won’t hear him making much of the national ranking his Under-13 Magic boys currently enjoy — at least not in their company.

“We don’t want it getting in their heads and them resting on their laurels,” said Griffin, whose team sits second in’s Canadian pecking order. “There’s still more work to do.”

Semi-finalists at a pair of high-end U.S. tournaments earlier this year, the U-13 Magic continued to make the soccer community sit up and take notice with this past weekend’s golden performance at the prestigious Robbie International Tournament in Toronto.

Nikolas Drjie’s rock-solid netminding and some clutch scoring highlighted an undefeated campaign for the local pre-teens, who capped their title run with back-to-back 2-0 victories over Mississauga’s Sigma FC and CAF United in the semis and finals respectively.

But the tournament’s high point, as far as drama was concerned, came in the quarterfinals.

Down 2-0 at half-time — a rare multi-goal deficit this season — the Magic battled back to tie the Kitchener Spirit before prevailing 5-3 on penalty kicks.

Usuika Chiezugo delivered the equalizer with eight minutes remaining, after Jordon McNally cut the lead in half on a free kick.

Drjie would make a huge save in the shootout, while his teammates all made good on their penalty kicks.

“It was definitely a character win for us,” said Griffin, who took over the Martindale Dental-sponsored team this season and — as of last night — sat 3-0 in Golden Horseshoe league play.
